About Us ~ Our History
Although this magnitude of cagebird varieties is relatively new to us, the interest in birds in general goes back 25 or more years. Our first encounter with the bird industry started shortly after we were married in 1970. We had become involved in showing classic poultry breeds through the agricultural societies. This lead to upland gamebirds, pheasants, peacocks, waterfowl ...you name it I probably had it at one time. We called our rather extensive hobby farm " Birds of Paradise" This occupied all our free time for many years and we had become quite well known in this aspect of the bird fancy.
As time evolved, we slowly cut back and eventually diminished our stock down to nothing. From that point we had regenerated a new interest in breeding and showing dogs,...American Cocker Spaniels to be exact.. This new found hobby was found to be interesting and profitable. Eventually this industry led us into a grooming business as well as a fairly large scale boarding facility. We have since then changed our breed of choice from cockers to Italian greyhounds... the latter requiring much less maintenance.
Through all these years without a feather on the premises, I had always retained a desire to get back into it again...perhaps when i retire. At the age of 55, my wife Sheila and I had decided to dive into it once again, but we didnt want to go the same route as before. We had been there, done that.... No, we jointly decided we would try the exoitic cage birds. At first we studied up on most of the more accessible breeds. Armed with our rejuvenated knowledge we started buying up most of the breeds we had studied. In doing so, we met other breeders in this industry and every one of them are so friendly and helpful in getting us started.
Now, we have a pretty sizable arsenal of breeding stock and through study as well as trial and error, we have managed to sustain a healthy reproduction system. At present we have contacted several pet stores locally and nearby towns who will take on our stock for resale. Of course we will also sell directly to the public as well. We still maintain the dog business at the same time as we are building the bird business.
If you are thinking " Where do you find time to relax?", here is my answer to that. If this lifestyle pleases you, follow it. some people can find comfort and relaxation where as other would feel restricted or suppressed. My wife and I both agree that bringing life into this world so that others may learn and enjoy it, by far outweighs the work, expenses, and sacrifices that go into it. Do I find time to enjoy some leisure time, "Absolutely". I am also an avid gardener ! Be it puppies, plants or birds to name a few, we do it all and we do it all for you !
